What do I do if I need a wee whilst out dog walking (aka wilderness wees)

It’s all very well for the dogs, peeing wherever they like in full view of the neighbours, but what do you do if you need to go too?

Wilderness wees, as we call them in our house, are all part of being in the outdoors and a few tips and tricks can make them easier and less intimidating.

Gents…you’re all good, you can skip this article 😉

How do I pee outdoors without getting caught?

This is probably the most frequent worry people have, that they don’t want to be caught with their pants down.

One of the most important things to remember when peeing outdoors is to be respectful of the environment and others. Try to find a private spot that’s at least 200 feet away from any water source or trail, behind a tree, bush, rock or in a natural dip in the terrain.

You can also try squatting as low to the ground as you can to minimise being seen and if you remembered to bring toilet paper or wipes with you, then pack them out with you, as leaving them behind is harmful to the environment. One of your dog’s poo bags will do to pop the paper in.

How can I pee outside without exposing myself?

Once you’ve found some privacy, and made sure that you’re not in plain sight of anyone passing by, the next thing is to make sure you have the right stance. To avoid exposing yourself, try to squat low to the ground. This will help you avoid accidentally flashing anyone who might happen to walk by. You can also try leaning forward slightly to make sure everything stays covered.

At this point, do not be surprised when the dog, or dogs, you’re walking come and have a sniff. I know… but it is what it is! Having them on lead and hitched to a nearby tree can help but this will make you more visible.

Another trick is to wear the right clothes. Stretchy leggings or joggers will make it easier to squat down without worrying about your clothing getting in the way.

Lastly, practice makes perfect! The more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll become with finding the right spot and the right stance to avoid exposing yourself.

How can I avoid getting pee on my clothes?

This is a common concern for many women who are new to outdoor peeing. The first thing you can do is try to get as low to the ground as possible, which will help minimize splashing. You can also try angling yourself slightly to the side or back, which can help direct the flow of urine away from your clothes.

Another option is to use a funnel or similar device that’s designed specifically for female urination. These devices can help you aim more accurately and reduce the risk of getting pee on your clothes. Some popular brands include the SheWee and the GoGirl.

Are there any products that can help me pee more easily outside?

Yes! As mentioned above, there are several products on the market that are designed specifically to help women pee more easily outside. These products include funnels, which allow you to pee standing up, and disposable urination bags, which can be used to collect your urine and dispose of it later.

Some popular brands of female urination devices include the SheWee, GoGirl, and Tinkle Belle. These products are small, lightweight, and easy to use, making them a great option for women who enjoy spending time outdoors.

These devices may take some practice to get the hang of it, but they can be useful when you don’t have a more private spot to squat.

From experience, these devices work best if you’re wearing trousers with a zippered fly and that zip opens quite far down the front of the trouser. Otherwise, you’re still going to have to pull the front of the trousers down to get the funnel into position. Depending on what you usually wear on your walks, it may be easier to squat.

Is it okay to pee in public places?

The answer to this question can vary depending on where you are. In some countries or regions, it’s perfectly acceptable to pee in public places, especially if you’re in a rural area or a place with limited access to restrooms. However, in other places, it’s illegal to pee in public, and you could get fined or even arrested for doing so.

In the UK if you try to find a spot that’s as discreet as possible you shouldn’t end up with a conviction for exposure.

Obviously, this applies to walking out in the countryside and not your local park…
